St. Francis of Assisi founder of the Franciscans, is often called the Mirror of Christ because he was a true Christian, “Christ-like” to the core. He was a man who lived out the Sermon of the Mount better than anyone else, except of course, the man who first preached it. You are invited to encounter the Lord by pondering the life of the great St. Francis of Assisi. Join a 15-day Franciscan pilgrimage to Italy with Fr. Reu Galoy, OFM leaving on October 25, 2018. May his life inspire all of us to faithfully follow the footprints of Jesus Christ as he once did.

Begin your pilgrimage in the eternal city of Rome. Visit the city’s major sights including the Vatican City. From Rome, travel south to San Giovanni Rotondo to visit the Shrine of Padre Pio, where he spent most of his life. Celebrate with other Pilgrims during this momentous 50th year anniversary of his death and 100th anniversary of his stigmata. Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Grace (Santa Maria delle Grazie) where Padre Pio used to say Mass and hear confessions. See also his cell, his confessional, and the crucifix from which he received his stigmata.

Head for Greccio, where St. Francis organized the first ever live re-enactment of the Bethlehem nativity scene using a donkey and an ox and his followers on Christmas Eve. The tradition of having a manger scene is still practised by most Christians up to this day. Travel onwards to Rivo Torto where now stands the Church of Santa Maria of Rivotorto, the first home of St. Francis and the brothers. In spite of the austere dwelling, St. Francis and his companions were happy living there.

Continue your journey for a two-night stay in Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare. This sublime, well-preserved medieval town is steeped with the spirituality of St. Francis. Visit the magnificent 13th century Basilica di San Francesco which contains the sacred relics of Francis and beautiful frescoes of his life.

Next stop is picturesque Florence, the birthplace of Renaissance. The Historic Center of Florence is noted for its culture, Renaissance art and architecture, and monuments. Due to Florence’s artistic and architectural heritage, it is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is considered as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

From Florence, the pilgrimage continues with a visit to the city of Padua. Marvel at the magnificent Basilica of St. Anthony de Padua, where lies the Saint’s tomb. St. Anthony was renowned for his preaching that in the Basilica his preserved tongue and vocal cords were discovered incorrupt, even if the rest of his body had decayed.

Wind down your pilgrimage with a full day excursion to Venice, to see the city’s main attractions which include the Basilica of St. Mark, a magnificent basilica which houses the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist, St. Mark’s Square, the principal public square and social hub of Venice.

St. Francis of Assisi became renowned for his love, simplicity and practice of poverty. Trace the life he lived in this 15-day Franciscan Pilgrimage to Italy with Fr. Reu Galoy leaving on October 15, 2018. May it help deepen your life’s journey as you get to know this “giant of holiness” who prayed:

“Most High, glorious God, cast Your Light into the darkness of my heart, and grant me a right faith, certain hope and perfect charity, sense and understanding, Lord, so that I may know and do Your holy and true command.” (St. Francis of Assisi: Prayer before the Crucifix).

Testimonials

Dear Pilgrim Center: My husband Aldo & I would like to praise & commend our Pilgrim Chaplain Fr. Dante Venus & our Tour Leader Bro. Monty for the very successful & memorable pilgrimage to Italy & the Holy Land we were very fortunate to join on March 26-April 8, 2018. It was very hectic to be sure, but still they managed our time very well that we were able to visit more places than was promised in the itinerary, and we are very appreciative of that. Likewise, the solemnity of the whole pilgrimage experience was still observed despite many of us in the group, myself included, often forgetting that we were pilgrims & not tourists 😉😉, taking photos, selfies, etc. instead of, or before focusing on what the local guide was explaining or on the scripture readings. I cannot fault us pilgrims on this because for many of us seniors, and I speak for my husband & I, that trip might be our first & last time to visit those places, so we made sure they were properly documented. Nonetheless, it was a truly spiritually uplifting & life-changing experience for us. We continue to thank our Lord for making that experience of a lifetime possible. Indeed, nothing is impossible for God! Thank you very much to Fr. Dante, Bro. Monty & to each of us pilgrims in the group for the prayers, love, care & concern shown to each other. Let us continue to pray for and with each other. It is my hope that we meet each other again soon, to strengthen our bonds of friendships. Most sincerely, Leclec Cabusora

I am honored to be included in this pilgrimage. The Pilgrims' Center has very good itineraries worth remembering. No hours wasted. They took very good care of us in spite of our big number of 47 people. The daily mass and homilies of Fr. Manny Cruz held in different shrines and churches were very inspirational and transforming. Accommodations were nice most especially the one on top of the Mountain with an awesome view built in 1909. It's like travelling back in time. I definitely would want to do it again with Pilgrim Center.
