On March 25, 1945, on the 600th anniversary of the Eucharistic miracle of Amsterdam, Ida Peerdeman claimed to have seen the Blessed Virgin Mary, who introduced herself to her as the “Lady of All Nations.” Ida saw 55 more apparitions, lasting until 1959. Over the span of 15 years, Our Lady revealed to Ida in advance several events and showed her an image of herself, later painted by artist Heinrich Repke based on the description of Ida. Today, that image is kept in a chapel built in 1973 in the southern part of Amsterdam.

The village of Einsiedeln in Switzerland is home to the miraculous image of Our Lady of Einsiedeln. The shrine located here dates from sometime in the 9th century, when a hermit from one of the local monasteries, Saint Meinard, built a hermitage in what was the open countryside and brought with him a wooden statue of the Madonna.

Known for giving hospitality to strangers, Meinard took in two travelers and fed them. They turned out to be thieves and beat him to death. In 940, some of the Benedictine Monks turned the hermitage into a small chapel where the statue was kept. The chapel is said to have been consecrated by Christ himself on September 14, 948. The bishop who was to consecrate the new site had a vision in which the church was filled with a brilliant light as Christ approached the altar. The next day, when he went to perform the ceremony, he heard a voice saying the chapel had already been divinely consecrated. The miracle was confirmed by Pope Leo VIII 16 years later in a papal bull. After the death of St. Meinard, the image of Our Lady of Einsiedeln was placed in the chapel for veneration. Numerous miracles have been attributed to her intercession.

Our Lady of La Vang refers to a reported Marian apparition at a time when Catholics were persecuted and killed in Vietnam. According to legend, Catholics sought refuge in the rainforests of Quang Tri Province, during which time many became very ill. While hiding in the jungle, the community gathered every night at the foot of a tree to pray the rosary. One night in 1798, on the grass near the banyan tree where the community was praying, a lady appeared, wearing the traditional Vietnamese dress and holding a child in her arms, with two angels beside her. The vision was interpreted as the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus Christ. They said that Our Lady comforted them and told them to boil leaves from the trees for medicine to cure their ills.

Here, Our Lady also promised: “Mother has accepted your request. From now on, whoever comes to invoke her in this place will receive the blessing of his or her will. ” Legend states that the term “La Vang” was a derivative of the Vietnamese word meaning “crying out.” In 1802, the Catholics returned to their villages, passing on the story of the apparition in La Vang and its message. As the story of the apparition spread, many came to pray at this site. In 1820, a chapel was built.  Since then, the chapel has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times. In 1998, Pope John Paul II publicly recognized the importance of Our Lady of La Vang and expressed a desire to rebuild the La Vang Basilica in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the first vision. In 2012, the New Basilica was officially built with the endorsement of the Vietnamese government.

Embark on a 10-day pilgrimage to Northern Vietnam that includes a visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang with a Pilgrimage Chaplain, on November 5-14, 2024.

Begin your pilgrimage with a visit to the awe-inspiring Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang. Offer prayers and lift up your petitions to Our Lady at this miraculous apparition site. Head for the ancient city of Hue, the seat of the final Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnamese Emperors. This former imperial city was the intellectual and cultural heart of Vietnam until the early twentieth century. Visit the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a beautiful and impressive building. The most interesting feature of the church is how the architectural style is a true blend of east and west. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful churches in Hue City.

Next, visit the Phu Cam Church (Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral), one of the most famous and oldest churches in the city, admired for its ancient architecture. Continue with your historical visits to the Royal Tomb of Tu Duc King, the Royal Tomb of Khai Dinh King, the Forbidden Purple City, and the Thien Mu Pagoda, also known as the Pagoda of Heavenly Lady, located on a sloping pine hill with the front side facing the Perfume River. See the major sights of Da Nang, which include a visit to the Da Nang Cathedral, also called the Pink Church, known for its impressive pink color and Gothic architecture.

Head for the Quang Nam province to visit the Shrine of the Lady of Tra Kieu, a famous Marian apparition site dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians in remembrance of the Blessed Mother’s help in Catholic resistance to the Can Vuong movement. Proceed to Hoi An, an old town, to explore the ancient city’s major sights. Take a local flight from Da Nang for your two-night stay in Hanoi, literally a “city between the rivers.” Vietnam’s capital city is layered with French and Chinese influence and offers well-preserved French colonial architecture, religious sites, and several historical landmarks of Vietnamese imperial periods. Visit the Pilgrimage Center of Bang So in the Thuong Tin district of Hanoi City, built in honor of Martyr Fr. Peter Le Tuy, who bravely bore witness to God by willingly sacrificing himself and shedding his blood to show his loyalty to the faith and the Church.

Explore Phung Khoang Church (Our Lady of the Rosary Church), built in 1910 and situated in the western part of Hanoi. Stop by the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. This commanding construction was built from 1973 to 1975 to house the embalmed body of Vietnam’s greatest political leader, Ho Chi Minh. A short distance away is Cua Bac Church, one of the most ancient churches in Hanoi and originally known as the “Cathedral of the Queen of the Martyrs.” Not to be missed is Saint Joseph’s Cathedral, also known as Hanoi Cathedral, whose architect was inspired by the Neo-Gothic style of the Notre Dame de Paris.

Travel down south for your two-night stay in Ninh Binh, which includes a full-day visit to the different beautiful and ancient Catholic churches of Nam Dinh. Not to be missed is a visit to the Bui Chu Cathedral, with the full name of Cathedral of Mary, Queen of the Rosary, built in 1885 by French colonists. It is considered the cradle of Catholicism in Vietnam. The diocese is reportedly Vietnam’s first place where Catholicism was introduced by foreign missionaries in 1533. Wind down your pilgrimage with a relaxing overnight Halong Bay cruise. Bask in the serenity of limestone sculptures hewn by nature. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has roughly 2,000 islands and islets with beautiful grottos, hidden ponds, mangrove forests, and unusual stone formations.

When you experience the blessings of Marian Pilgrimages as you bathe in the healing waters of the Baths in Lourdes.

When you hear of the Miracle of the Sun in Fatima.

When you contemplate the priceless works of art in Rome.

When you reflect on the Prayer of St. Francis while in Assisi.

You will be changed forever.

At the core of Marian Pilgrimages are apparitions and miracles associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary and the lives of saints.

You are invited to join a 15-day Pilgrimage to the Marian Shrines of Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy with Fr. Allan Morris Abuan on September 9-23, 2024, and take this important step to deepen your relationship with God.

Your pilgrimage begins with a Mass at the Church of St. Anthony in LisbonPortugal. The Church of St. Anthony was built on the site where St. Anthony of Lisbon (also known as St. Anthony of Padua) was born in 1195. Across is the Lisbon Cathedral, where St. Anthony was baptized. Travel onwards to Fatima, where you will spend two nights at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima. The fame of this place is the result of the apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary to three shepherd children – Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta.

Leave Portugal for Spain and head for the medieval city of Burgos. Celebrate Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos, also known as Burgos Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of Santa Maria is Burgos’s historic jewel and one of Spain’s great Gothic churches.

Travel onwards to Lourdes, France, to spend two nights at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. The sanctuary is the site of an apparition of the Blessed Mother seen by Bernadette Soubirous, who was later canonized. Pray the rosary and spend time in quiet reflection at the Grotto of Massabielle, the Blessed Mother’s apparition site. Not to be missed is the evening rosary procession, where “Ave Maria” is sung in unison and the rosary is recited in different languages.

Enjoy a leisurely drive along the Mediterranean coastline of the French Riviera, where you will have an overnight stay in the elegant city of Nice. Leave France for Italy for your two-night stay in the small town of Assisi, a place where spirituality seamlessly blends with the natural beauty of the Italian landscape. Journey through the narrow cobblestone streets and sacred sites of this charming city, where the spirit of St. Francis lingers in the air. Not to be missed is a visit to the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains the Saint’s tomb and the masterpieces of Giotto and Cimab.

Leave Assisi for Loreto to visit the Holy House of Nazareth in the Basilica. Head for Lanciano to visit the Church of St. Legontian, site of an eight-century Eucharistic Miracle.  Journey on to San Giovanni Rotondo, where St. Padre Pio spent most of his life. Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Grace (Santa Maria delle Grazie), where Padre Pio used to say Mass and hear confessions. See also his cell, his confessional, and the crucifix from which he received his stigmata.

Cap off your pilgrimage with a two-night stay in Rome, the heart and home of the Catholic Church. Marvel at the unique collection of artistic and architectural masterpieces at the Vatican. View the awe- inspiring St. Peter’s Basilica, built over the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle.

Learn more about the people and places that helped shape our faith and the devotions they inspired. Join a 15-day Pilgrimage to the Marian Shrines of Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy with Fr. Allan Morris Abuan on September 09-23, 2024. May this pilgrimage be the stepping stone that will move all pilgrims forward, closer to Jesus.

Lourdes Water has become a focus of devotion to the Blessed Mother at Lourdes. Since the apparitions, numerous people have claimed to have been cured by drinking or bathing in it. The 70th Lourdes miracle was officially recognized by the Catholic Church last 2018. Pray the rosary and spend time in quiet reflection at the Grotto of Massabielle, the Blessed Mother’s apparition site. Not to be missed is the evening rosary procession, where “Ave Maria” is sung in unison and the rosary is recited in different languages.

Head for Paris, the cosmopolitan capital of France and one of Europe’s largest cities. Paris has the well-deserved reputation of being the most beautiful and romantic of all cities. Enjoy a delightful tour of the city that includes a cruise on the River Seine. Celebrate Mass at the Chapel of Our Lady ofthe Miraculous Medal in Rue de Bac, an important place of prayer and pilgrimage that draws believers from all over the world who wish to prayerfully reflect and ask for the Virgin Mary’s protection.

Leave France for Italy for your three-night stay in Rome, the heart and home of the Catholic Church. Vision of Beauty: Healing the Soul of the World

This year’s Pilgrimage expresses the WCCM theme, the essential goodness and beauty of the world: “And God saw that it was very good.” All pilgrimage involves moving from place to place with the enjoyment of good company. But the true destination is spiritual, not physical, which means the whole person in harmony with others and their surroundings. Our goal is the “vision of beauty”.

Beauty heals us personally, so we can heal the world. This pilgrimage has to have a significant financial cost, but I believe that if each of us truly sees beauty in new ways, we will be better healers of the world. We will be in beautiful places and contemplate beautiful art, not as tourists rushing from one thing to another, but as contemplatives, taking time to be truly present to the divine gift of beauty as part of God’s own being.

Each day will give priority to prayer, finding the beauty within, sharing our response to the gift of enrichment and peace. I look forward to being in this time of beauty and healing with you for the sake of the world.

 ~ Fr. Laurence Freeman OSB

Note: The spiritual frame of each day will be morning prayer and meditation, contemplative Eucharist and meditation, and evening prayer and meditation
