Jordan & Holy Land
The Holy Land is the fifth gospel which is not written in ink, but written on stones. The diversity of Christian sites there ranges from the churches and other places marking significant events found in Scripture like the Annunciation in Nazareth, the Nativity in Bethlehem, Jesus’ ministry along the Sea of Galilee and of course Jerusalem, where the site of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection is now marked by the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Bring life and meaning to your Christian faith. Join a 12-day Pilgrimage to Jordan and the Holy Land with a Pilgrimage Chaplain together with Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD in the Holy Land leaving on November 08, 2023.
Begin your pilgrimage in Mount Nebo in Jordan, the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land by Yahweh. Visit the Sanctuary of Nebo, a memorial of Moses on the site of his death and burial place. Next stop is Petra, the ancient lost city of Jordan. Literally carved directly into vibrant red, white, pink and sandstone cliff, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the world’s most stunning archaeological sites.
Cross the border of Jordan into Israel via the Allenby Bridge and head for Magdala, a first century city where the Jewish residents gathered in a synagogue where Jesus visited and taught. Magdala is also believed to be the home of Mary Magdalene.
Next stop is a visit to the town of Nazareth, the cradle of Christianity. Marvel at the grandiose Basilica of the Annunciation, built on the site where the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she will become the Mother of God. Beside the Basilica is the Church of St. Joseph, the carpentry shop of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Depart for Mount Tabor, the site of the transfiguration of Jesus. Visit the awe inspiring Church of the Transfiguration, one of the most beautiful churches in the Holy Land. Not to be missed is an enjoyable boat ride crossing the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus performed numerous miracles.
Take an early morning drive to Cana where married couples-pilgrims will have the chance to renew their marriage vows at the Wedding Church in Cana. Next stop is at the Mount of Beatitudes, believed to be the setting for Jesus most famous discourse, the Sermon of the Mount. It is also one of the most beautifully serene places in the Holy Land. Head for Capernaum, described as Jesus “own city” and a place where He lived. Visit the Church of the St. Peter, built over the ruins of the house of St. Peter.
Head for the River Jordan, where St. John baptized Jesus. Here, you will also have the chance to renew your baptismal vows at Yardenit. Journey on to the holy town of Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. Visit the Basilica of the Nativity, which houses the Grotto of the Nativity and the Altar of Christ’s Birth. A silver star marks the exact place where Jesus was born.
Next stop is Jerusalem, a city holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims. This heart of the Holy Land, is the place where Jesus was crucified, died and rose again. In the Old City of Jerusalem, take a meaningful walk along the Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrows) where, you will recall the passion and death of Jesus. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is Jerusalem’s holiest site and is said to have been built on Golgotha or Calvary, the site where Jesus was crucified.
Cap off your pilgrimage in Emmaus, the place where Jesus revealed himself to two of His disciples after His resurrection. Celebrate your last Mass at the Church of Notre Dame de L’Arche d Alliance, a 1924 church built on the remains of an ancient Byzantine church.
Embark on a powerful journey of faith through seeing the places Jesus walked, worked miracles, died and rose again. Join a 12-day Pilgrimage to Jordan and the Holy Land with a Pilgrimage Chaplain together with Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD in the Holy Land leaving on November 8, 2023.
