Today, the 13th day of May, is the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. It was on this day that the Blessed Virgin Mary started her series of apparition to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917. She appeared six times to Lucia, who was then 9 years of age, and her cousins Francisco, who was 8 at that time, and his sister Jacinta, aged 6, every 13th of the month between the months of May and October.
The lives of the three children of Fatima were entirely transformed by the heavenly apparitions. While fulfilling the duties of their state with the greatest fidelity, those children seemed now to live only for prayer and sacrifice, which they offered in a spirit of reparation to obtain peace and the conversion of sinners. They deprived themselves of water during the periods of great heat; they gave their lunch to poor children; they wore around their waists thick cords that even drew blood; they abstained from innocent pleasures and urged one another to the practice of prayer and penance with an ardour comparable to that of the great saints.
The Blessed Mother came to the little village of Fatima which had remained faithful to the Catholic Church during the recent oppressions by the government. Our Lady came with a message from God to all. She promised that the whole world would be in peace, and that many souls would go to Heaven if her requests were listened to and obeyed. She requested all followers of her Son Jesus for prayers for peace in Russia and the whole world. She requested for reparation and conversion of hearts.
May our Lady of Fatima ever cover us with the mantle of her maternal protection and bring us closer to Jesus, our peace.
