A pilgrimage to the Land of the Bible is a once-in-a lifetime experience for every Christian. Being in the place where it all happened gives a whole new perspective when reading scripture; it makes the Bible come alive in ways that words cannot describe. Reconnect with God as you visit the places where Jesus was born, lived, died, and was raised from the dead. Join a 13-day pilgrimage to the Land of the Bible (Jordan, the Holy Land, and Egypt) with Fr. Franklin Beltran, O. P. on November 21 to December 3, 2023.
Begin your pilgrimage in Jordan to visit Mount Nebo, the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land. See the Moses Sanctuary, a memorial to Moses on the site of his death and burial place. Head for the ancient, lost city of Petra. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the world’s most stunning archaeological sites. It is literally carved directly into the vibrant red, white, pink, and sandstone cliffs.
Cross the Sheikh Hussein border to get from Jordan to Israel. Continue on to Nazareth, the childhood home of Jesus, and Mount Tabor, where he was transfigured. Head for the Jordan River, where pilgrims will have the opportunity to renew their baptismal vows. Not to be missed is an enjoyable boat ride across the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus miraculously walked on water.
Depart for Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle at a wedding feast by changing water into wine. Here, married couples will have the chance to renew their marriage vows at the Wedding Church of Cana. Drive to Jericho, one of the world’s oldest cities. Take a look at the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days before beginning his public ministry. Head for the Dead Sea, which is the lowest point on earth. Enjoy a plunge in the salty water, where you will float endlessly, and cover yourself with some mineral-rich mud that is healthy for your skin.
Continue on to Bethlehem, the holy city where Jesus was born. Touch the silver star, which marks the exact place where He was born.
The next stop is Jerusalem, a holy city for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. In the heart of the Holy Land, Jesus was crucified and raised from the dead. Take a meaningful walk through the Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrows), where you can trace His steps and reflect on Jesus’ suffering and death. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is said to have been built on Golgotha, also known as Calvary, the site of Jesus’ crucifixion.
Leave Israel by crossing the Taba Border into Egypt. Stop at the foot of Mount Sinai, referred to as the Mountain of Moses, which is believed to be the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. Visit St. Catherine’s Monastery, the legendary site of the burning bush, where God revealed Himself to Moses.
Wind down your pilgrimage in Cairo, the cradle of civilization. Egypt’s sprawling capital is a place where the past and present meet. Visit the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and travel back in time to the era of ancient Egypt. Explore the Egypt Museum‘s impressive collection of ancient artifacts, which includes the brilliant treasures of King Tut Angh Amun.
See one of the most famous and oldest churches in Cairo, the Church of the Virgin Mary, better known by its nickname, the Hanging Church. The next stop is a visit to the Saints Sergius and Bacchus church. Built in the fourth century, this church is located above the cave where the Holy Family is said to have stayed after they fled into Egypt. End your pilgrimage with a delightful evening cruise on the Nile River.
