Begin your pilgrimage on Mount Carmel to visit a small Carmelite monastery in Muhraka, where stands a dramatic stone statue of the Prophet Elijah, which remembers Elijah’s fire-lighting challenge to the pagan priests of Baal. The next stop is a visit to Magdala, a first-century city best known as the hometown of Mary Magdalene. The city is the site of an archeological dig that has unearthed an early synagogue as well as more remains of ancient life. Celebrate mass in one of the chapels of the Duc in Altum.
Head for Nazareth, the cradle of Christianity. Marvel at the grandiose Basilica of the Annunciation, built on the site where the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would become the Mother of God. Beside the Basilica is the Church of St. Joseph, which houses the carpentry shop of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary. Depart for Mount Tabor, the site of the transfiguration of Jesus. Visit the awe- inspiring Church of the Transfiguration, one of the most beautiful churches in the Holy Land.
Travel onward to the Galilee area and visit Capernaum, described as Jesus’ “own city” and a place where he lived. Visit the Church of St. Peter, built over the ruins of the house of St. Peter. Not to be missed is an enjoyable boat ride across the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus performed miracles.
Take an early morning drive to Cana, where married couples and pilgrims will have the chance to renew their marriage vows at the Wedding Church in Cana. The next stop is at the Mount of Beatitudes, believed to be the setting for Jesus’s most famous discourse, the Sermon of the Mount. It is also one of the most beautiful and serene places in the Holy Land.
Renew your baptismal vows at the River Jordan, where St. John baptized Jesus. Visit Neve Midbar Beach, located along the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest spot on earth. Continue on to Jericho, the oldest city in the world. View the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus was led by the Spirit on a forty-day retreat after His baptism and prior to His public ministry.
The charming, picturesque village of Ein Karem is the home town of Zechariah and Elizabeth, the parents of John the Baptist, and the place of the Visitation. You will be greeted by one of the Church’s most beloved hymns, Mary’s Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), which she prayed when she met Elizabeth and is now written in no less than 47 languages on the wall facing the Church of the Visitation. Then head for the holy town of Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. Visit the Basilica of the Nativity, which houses the Grotto of the Nativity and the Altar of Christ’s Birth. A silver star marks the exact place where Jesus was born.
Visit Jerusalem, a city holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. This is the heart of the Holy Land, where Jesus was crucified, died, and rose again. In the Old City of Jerusalem, take a meaningful walk along the Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrows), where you will recall the passion and death of Jesus. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is Jerusalem’s holiest site and is said to have been built on Golgotha, or Calvary, the site where Jesus was crucified.
Cap off your pilgrimage at Emmaus, the place where Jesus revealed himself to two of His disciples after His resurrection. Celebrate your last Mass at the Church of Notre Dame de L’Arche d’Alliance, a 1924 church built on the remains of an ancient Byzantine church.
Discover a deeper relationship with the Lord. Join a 9-day Pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Fr. Jowel Gatus from January 30 to February 7, 2024. May the times spent in prayer and reflection while on pilgrimage refresh your faith and bring you closer to Jesus.
