Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and famous for Gaudí and other Art Nouveau architecture, Barcelona is one of Europe’s trendiest cities. It’s a hub of new trends in the world of culture, fashion, and cuisine. It combines the creativity of its artists and designers with respect for and care for local traditions. Enjoy a city tour of Barcelona including a guided tour of Barcelona Old Town and take an enjoyable walk through the Gothic Quarter and Ramblas.
Head for Montserrat, where a magnificent monastery is nestled in the cliffs of the beautiful Montserrat mountain range. The Basilica, next to the Monastery ofMontserrat, is home to the revered image of Our Lady of Montserrat. Not to be missed is a chance to offer prayers and petitions before her miraculous image. Next stop is Manresa, the cradle city of the Jesuit Order, where St. Ignatius lived in a cave and wrote his famous Spiritual Exercises. Take a full-day excursion to Andorra La Vella, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its exceptional flora and fauna. An unmissable destination for shopaholics, Andorra La Vella is a shopping paradise.
Return to Barcelona to visit the city’s most famous sights, including the Basilica de la SagradaFamilia (Holy Family), a towering neo-Gothic church built by Antoni Gaudi. The unfinished, amazing monument is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next stop, Zaragoza, is renowned for its imposing Basilica-Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar. The basilica dates back to the dawn of Christianity in Spain, attributing itself to an apparition of the Blessed Mother to St. James, an apostle of Jesus.
Proceeding to Monteagudo, the Augustinian Recollect Novitiate Monastery Chapel houses the incorrupt body of St. Ezequiel Moreno, the patron saint of cancer patients. Continue your travel adventure to Pamplona, one of Spain’s greenest cities, ensuring nature lovers a pleasurable time. Pamplona is best known for the Running of the Bulls festival (Feast of St. Fermin), celebrated every July.
Head for Bilbao in the Basque Country, northern Spain, to visit the world-famous Guggenheim Museum, a museum of modern and contemporary art. Drive to the top of Mount Artxanda for a panoramic view of the city of Bilbao. Not to be missed is a walking tour of the old town, “El Casco Viejo.”
Next stop is a visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu, where St. Ignatius of Loyola spent a night in vigil and made his vow of chastity. St. Ignatius referred to this night vigil at this sanctuary as a time of great grace for strengthening his resolve to follow Christ. Proceed to Loyola and celebrate mass at the Chapel of Conversion in the Sanctuary of Loyola, the family home of St. Ignatius, founder of the Society of Jesus.
Proceed to Lourdes for your overnight stay at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, an apparition site of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1858. Here, 18 apparitions were reported. Pray the rosary and spend time in quiet reflection at the Grotto of Massabielle, the Blessed Mother’s apparition site. Not to be missed is the evening rosary and candlelight procession, where the “Ave Maria” is sung in unison and the rosary is recited in different languages.
Return to Bilbao, making a stop in the picturesque city of Bayonne, located in southwest France. Visit the Cathedral Ste-Marie. Head to Spain’s gastronomic capital, the charming coastal city of SanSebastian. A full-day trip to the Basque Countryside is a great way to end your travel adventure.
